Your baby’s first birthday party
Your baby’s first birthday party is a very important day both for you, as a parent, and for the child. It should be a fun and enjoyable party. The focus should be both on the baby and also on the guests. Planning such a party requires some thinking ahead but in the end, it is all worth it. Before starting the actual planning, you should put together a checklist, in order to have all your ideas written down.
Establishing the budget should be made early in the planning process. Based on it, you are going to choose the party decorations, the location, the menu, the entertainment elements and much more. The party invitations can be personalized. Put a cute photo of your baby on the front of a folded invitation.
The party should not last more than a few hours, as babies get tired easily. It should take place when the baby is rested and in a good mood. It should take place in the morning or after the baby has had his or her naptime. The first birthday party should take place at home, because this is the place because the baby is familiar with it and he or she feels the most comfortable here. You can also have the party at a relative’s home or at a playground the child is familiar with.
One year olds don’t have any expectations concerning a party. The first anniversary party is mostly for the invited family and friends who wish to celebrate the first year of the baby’s life. If the baby usually plays with other children, make sure to invite them and their parents to the anniversary. You can even put together a play date with cupcakes. Adult guests can have fun playing interactive games.
For example, parents can ask the guests to choose the correct answer to questions related to the baby’s preferences. Many people don’t know how much a baby can or can not do at the age of one. You can write a list of things your baby could do and ask the guests to choose the correct ones: touching his nose, rolling on the ground, climbing the stairs, eating an apple, crawling, saying the alphabet, etc.
Children love decorations and colours, but one year olds don’t require a very elaborate theme party at such a young age. You can choose a cartoon character which is popular with one year olds, like Winnie the Pooh, Barney or some of the characters on Sesame Street. The baby’s favourite toys should be present: a doll, a favourite teddy bear, etc. The favourite toy can also be made into a theme for the party. A cartoon-based theme baby shower would be the most fun! Guests can come wearing costumes of amusing cartoon characters, and so would the most important person at the party: the birthday baby. Each guest can choose their favourite cartoon character they grew up with and bring the baby something with that character on it: a book, a picture, a toy, a plastic cup. You can have cartoon decorations on the walls and all through the room, using pictures, cartoon character shaped balloons, table cloths, napkins and cushions. In the background, play some cartoon theme music.
Babies love balloons, which should be indispensable at any type of party. Helium filled birthday balloons shaped as stars, animals or hearts can be tied to tables, chairs or toys. Colourful streamers can be hung anywhere in the room so that kids can imagine that they have entered a wonderful fantasy world. Tie large bows on the curtains, on the furniture, at the windows and doors or even put them on the table cloth. You can hang customised birthday banners to wish the baby “Happy 1st Birthday!”
If you want the babies to feel special, you can bring customised furniture to the party. Babies can serve cupcakes at a small plastic table with tiny baby chairs for them to sit on. The play room or play area should be filled with soft toys and cushions, so that the babies will not be in the danger of harming themselves in sharp corners.
Fun activities to do at a first year old’s party are: reading or telling stories, playing with balls, pulling children for rides in small wagons, pulling a string pinata or playing with stacking toys. Finger painting is another fun activity, but the children require close supervision from the adults. Even food at the party can be fun. You can serve animal crackers and cookies, small cheese sandwiches, muffins, pretzels, vegetables with dip, cut fruit and tea or hot chocolate. And who says you can’t hand out party favours to a first year old’s birthday party? Finger puppets, pictures and colourful balls make great party gifts.
A great idea would be to create some sort of a birthday time capsule. Ask each guest to bring small toys or photos or any other objects which they would like to give to the baby, and seal them in a box. They can even put inside small letters or poems for the child to read when older. This will make a great surprise for future birthday parties, both for the child and for the guests.
At the end of the party, you can invite each participant to write something on a book that you have prepared some memories of the baby’s first year or some wishes for the baby. You can also take photos of the adults and children, together with the baby, and put them in this memory book. The result is a great baby scrapbook which you can keep for years and years. You can offer it to your child as a special gift when he or she grows up!
Thank your guests when they leave by giving them a gift. The parents can have anything from a personalised ‘thank you card’ to a more elaborate gift, make lots of childrens party bags filled with toys, sweeties and cake for them to take home too.
